THE MISSING LINKS IN ALCOHOL ADDICTION RECOVERY:

Are you new to alcohol recovery?
Have you just finished an alcohol treatment program?

You need all the help you can get with alcohol addiction!

To run an effective and successful recovery program requires tremendous discipline, courage, persistence and determination. Remember that there are many resources that you can access and you do not have to do it alone!

What are the missing links to recovery?

First, Let me tell you my story:

The mask…

It looked as if I had a great life.
In my university years, I was named as MVP for the Men’s gymnastics team twice. Sure I drank a little too much alcohol on weekends, but I thought it wasn’t really a problem. Besides, I was now a health professional with a promising future and a well established practice. I was actively involved in the community, had many friends and was still a big sports enthusiast.

I appeared to be happy and healthy on the outside…

The truth…

Life looked great from the outside, but I was on a downward spiral My mask came off very unceremoniously after a bitter divorce!

It was only then that I finally realized that I had a serious problem with alcohol and other mood altering chemicals. I had contracted pneumonia, lost nearly 35 pounds and could barely walk before I gave up and finally asked for help. I was on a rapid downward spiral. Just before I crashed, I wrote these thoughts and feelings in my journal.

“I am so afraid and so lonely. It seems that the grown man I have become can find no way to escape the feeling of pain, humiliation, hopelessness and despair.

Who will listen to me? Who will believe my story “I should've been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across the floors of silent seas."

What Happened?

As I became clean sober, I discovered the missing links of recovery from addiction. My peers and I found a higher power, studied the alcoholism 12 steps, had an attitude of gratitude and many of us even claimed to have had a spiritual awakening.

Then why was it that after months of treatment that many people relapsed back into their disease and struggled and died?

The challenging journey of recovery is extremely individual and entirely personal. No two journeys are exactly the same. Anyone who travels knows that a road map improves your chances of reaching your destination. It’s the same with recovery.

If you are recovering from a life threatening disease or severe injury and disability, there will be many rocky roads, bumps and obstacles to overcome.

What it is like now?

As I recovered, I started helping others free themselves from alcohol addiction too. It has been my experience that many people who suffer from chemical dependency continue to believe it is dishonorable to be addicted. They attempt to conceal, minimize or deny it. People suffering from addiction fight not only the disease but the stigma attached to the disease.

This why I have written and published a book called Embracing the Journey of Recovery. There is no need for those suffering from addiction to continue to suffer. Life is not always fair and can be a monstrous challenge. But, you don’t have to fight the battle alone…

I finally learned to ask for help and to this day I still ask for help.

I lead a busy, challenging but very rewarding and joyful life today. I am currently running a full time chiropractic practice on beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada. I am currently training for my 2nd Iron Man Canada Triathlon.
