Part One: Toronto Maple Leaf Star - Ron Ellis

"Thirty-five years ago, in 1967, I had a dream come true. Just like most Canadian boys, I had dreamed of playing in the NHL. I also dreamed of winning a Stanley Cup, and the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Cup, beating the Montreal Canadiens. It's the last Cup the Leafs have won.

The hockey gods smiled on me again in 1972 by allowing me to be picked for Team Canada. It was the first time Canadian professionals would get a chance to play the Russians.

Most of you likely know the story, but in game eight, with just 34 seconds remaining, Paul Henderson's goal determined the winner and Canada won. In 2000, the Canadian Press chose Team Canada '72 as its Team of the Century. We brought all the players and their families back to Toronto for the celebration. They unveiled a monument at the corner of Yonge and Front, in front of the Hockey Hall of Fame, to honour the players and the accomplishment.

But if that ceremony had happened five years earlier, I likely would have declined to attend. Yes, that's true. I wouldn't have been able to force myself to participate in one of the greatest experiences of my life. You see, I was in the midst of a ten-year battle with clinical depression. You thought the Canada-Russia series was tough? My depression was the greatest challenge of my life."

Part Two: The Inspirational Hoyt Team

Team Hoyt is an amazing story about a courageous father and son. Rick Hoyt was born in 1962 with his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. This cut off oxygen to his brain.

Dick and his wife Judy were told that there would be no hope for Rick to develop normally. The Hoyts Accepted their son’s serious condition but they did not accept the bleak diagnosis of the doctors. They ignored the advice of doctors that he would live life in a persistent vegetative state. At the age of 12, Rick was able to learn by using a special computer to communicate with head movements.

The first words he typed were, "Go Bruins!", and the family learned he was a sports fan. In 1975, Rick was finally admitted into a public school. Two years later, he told his father he wanted to participate in a five-mile benefit run. They progressed to doing marathons and even Iron Man Triathlons.

Dick pulls Rick in a special boat as they swim, carries him in a special seat up front as they bike and pushes him in a special wheelchair as they run.

Watch the amazing story of Team Hoyt and how they turned tragedy into triumph!

Part Three: The Dr. Larry Smith Story

Larry Smith seemed to be living a happy, healthy and fulfilling life. On entering university in Manitoba Canada he was a star gymnastics athlete, had a family that loved him and a future that looked amazingly bright.

But, Larry had a dark secret.

At the age of 11, he suffered the most horrific challenge that can befall a growing adolescent - he was sexually abused by his priest. Coincidentally at age 11, he also began experimenting with alcohol and by the time he was 14, he was a weekend alcoholic.

Through his university years he studied and trained very hard. But with the life of a successful student and athlete there was never a shortage of occasions to share the good times and a few drinks. Sure, he drank a little too much on weekends but that never affected his school grades or his athletic performance. Besides his motto was “work hard and play hard.”

After he graduated, Larry desperately tried to appear healthy and happy on the outside but eventually the façade crumbled. Before Larry knew it, he was out of control. He was near death and alcohol was his master until he finally cried out for help.

Watch how (the now) Dr. Larry Smith overcame adversity and went on to establish a successful Chiropractic practice with the help of his support group and a loving family.

This story is an inspiration to all who have ever had to struggle with addiction.
